Future of e-Science - Prof. Ken Brodie, UK e-Science Envoy

GEO Grid: Systems federating Geospatial Data and Services, Mr Satoshi Sekiguchi, Japan

  • Using ASTER data on Terra - archive 2000-date, 1.4 million images, 140 TB. VNIR 3 bands, SWIR several, TIR several. Together with 15m DEM.
  • e.g. Landslide volume estimation, volcano prediction, etc.
  • Uses OGC interfaces, simple workflow engines and user services e.g. thumbnail pages.

Sharing and visualizing environmental data using Virtual Globes, Jon Blower, Reading e-Science Centre

  •  Presentation and  paper.
  • Virtual Globes - there are 30 of these (incl. GE, MS Virtual Earth, FreeEarth, !ArcGIS Explorer, NASAS WorldWind), many free!
  • Movie of Hurricane Katrina, cooling SST as intensifies, also CASIX, etc.
  • BODC use GE as Discovery/Browse? tool.
  • BAS use GE for King Penguin tracks overlaid on NEODAAS chl-a imagery.
  • Can extend the VG if open source, e.g. ArcGIS Explorer, NASA WorldWind using .NET API.
  • OceanDIVA: Ocean data assimilation for ESSC using GE.
  • Vertical structure of ocean, tried 4 layers above ground(!) using GE, need extension.
  • GML for more complex datasets than KML can handle, a la NDG, though not many tools available yet. Should be used to encode data for true interoperability, needs concerted effort on feature types.
  • WebGIS are alternatives to VG, e.g. GoogleMaps.
  • EU INSPIRE mandate - all public bodies must provide discovery/view/download services. 80% of all business/gov info has reference to location.

Interoperability Session

JSDL Application Repository and Artefact Sharing Portal for Heterogeneous Grids and the NGS, David Meredith

  • JSDL is an XML language for describing requirements of computational nodes for submission to a grid.
  • Sits above middleware-specific job desc. languages, copes with grid heterogeneity.
  • Online demo of NGS Job Portal.

Chat with Keith Haynes, Reading e-Science Centre

  • He demo'd Godiva2, nice Ajax-driven interface with clear date display/selection, nice 'fit data to window' and 'auto-colour-scale' buttons, automatic display of same region/closest time when switching datasets. We should learn from it.
  •  Godiva2,  DEWS NetCDF version,  MERSEA version.
  • Keith would like to have an NCOF version, also biological data from PML - I said this should be done through Tim's WCO, could go in other WMS servers in addition to the PML one.
  • I asked about Godiva2 for NDG visualisation, he said this should be possible if served as CF-netCDF by WMS.
  • I demo'd the PML WMS client, he thought it was quite fast and wondered if the images are pre-generated or on the fly, e.g. can we change colour scale?

A user interface framework for Grid-based computational steering and visualization. Jason Wood

  • Quite interesting, uses Java tool eViz and extended skML to describe visualisation components and controls, generates user interface with minimal coding.

Driving Google Earth from Fortran, Gen-Tao Chiang

  • Simple KML library, e.g. kmlBeginFile(...), kmlCreatePoints, ...Line, ...Contour, ...Cells (for 2D grid), can plot 2D grid by colour, contour or height, e.g. Greenland ice thickness

  • Could wrap it into C, IDL, etc. Jon Blower suggested an IDL kml_write function for any generic data type as if a file format like GIF.

  • I added in near-real time EO data.
  • Nathan is coordinating GEO-Ocean user group, including me and Tim.

OceanDIVA - tools for presenting datasets in GE

  • Nice plots of model skill vs in situ

gXXX - cluster submission & retrieval of data files

  • Transfers and deletes model output files from cluster to local computer.

Evening

  • Chats with BAS people: Helen Campbell (Manager Antarctic Env. Data Centre), Nathan Cunningham; Peter Kirsch (Computer Applications).
  • We can have GoogleEarth for internal use at work following clarified terms of service, see  Ogle Earth blog. What you can't do is sell products based on GE technology e.g. satnav for a car, or bulk downloads of GE layers.
  • Jon Blower recommends GE over the other virtual globes due to its handling of large datasets.
  • Ned Garnett, Coordinate of NERC part of e-Science programme, also involved in new 5-year NERC strategy. He referred to small continuation for NDG until Mar. 2008 for certain groups such as BAS to get their data discoverable, and get NDG tools operational.

Medical Visualization Beyond 2D Images, Prof Anders Ynnerman: Linkoping University, Sweden

  • Excellent visualisations.
  • Transfer Function (TF) is used to control colouring/transparency of different tissues/blood/bone/air/foreign objects along path of CT scan. These colours then used in ray tracing for 3D volume rendering.
  • TF-based decompression of volume data: transparent data block can be ignored, uniform colour can be vis at lower-res. Allows 64:1 reduction of data volume with small errors, allows real-time vis on smaller computers or bigger volumes on big computers.
  • Virtual autopsy for investigating whole-body CT without need for real autopsy or more information, e.g. bullet fragments.
  • Haptic pen for use on transparent mirror projection screen on animated sequences, pen is moved by beating heart and blood flows.
