Discovery review - Spatial map display on search page

Reported by: kthorne Owned by: lawrence

In the spatial map, at full extent, on the search page when it displays an image of the whole world it appears as though the UK is part of the European land mass. As soon as a zoom has been applied the English Channel becomes visible.

See attached screen capture as an illustration of what I mean.

Maybe the map source or perhaps the display area limit within the HTML skewing the display? If possible, it would be better if you could see evidence of the English Channel at full extent, particularly as we are based in the UK.

Can I suggest using the Demis WMS as an alternative to the default OpenLayers? background map? It's nicer to look at and is configurable as to what layers appear in the map (topo shading, bathymetry etc). Here's what it looks like at global extent:

And here's the line you need in openlayers to configure this as the map layer:

var wms = new OpenLayers.Layer.WMS( "Demis WMS", "http://www2.Demis.nl/MapServer/Request.asp?WRAPDATELINE=TRUE", {layers: 'Bathymetry,Topography,Hillshading,Coastlines,Builtup+areas,Waterbodies,Rivers,Streams,Railroads,Highways,Roads,Trails,Borders,Cities,Airports'}, {wrapDateLine: true});
map.addLayers([wms, etc...

  • Milestone changed from PROD Final to Updated NERC Metadata Gateway

I think we can make this configurable so different instances can do what they like.
