MOLES Workshop: Thursday 4th March, 2010

Venue:  MRC

Time: 10.30 -> 16.30

Bryan's Notes

Agenda

  • 10.00 - 10.30 Welcome, Coffee
  • 10.30 - 10.45 Tour of table and outline of current interests in Moles
  • 10.45 - 11.00 Agree Agenda

Session One: Current Status and Immediate Issues

Session aim is to look at the current and projected state of the MOLES information model.

There is no expectation that we have formal presentations in these slots, but that we use these slots to discuss the issues, and decide what we want to happen (which might be to set an action on a specific individual to do something).

  • 11.00 - 11.15 Reminder of the plan we developed last time (Bryan)
  • 11.15 - 11.45 MOLES Information Model, Current Status (Spiros)
  • 11.45 - 12.15 Computations in MOLES: Bringing  Metafor to MOLES (Bryan)
    • Metafor 1.4
    • (Including lessons learnt thus far about metadata collection, and the need for considering that in the information model)
    • Problems with attribute vocabularies as opposed to list vocabularies.
  • 12.15 - 12.30 Vocabulary Server current status and plans (Roy)
  • 12.30 - 13.15 Laboratory Analysis (e.g. Geochemistry) Use Cases: discussion led by Simon

(We'll address EOF next time)

LUNCH 13.15-14.00

Session Two: Software and Deployment Plans

Regardless of what we might decide in terms of futures for the information model, we need to start building stuff with the information model we have now (recognising that the point of the methodology is that we should be engineering for evolution from the beginning). Given that MOLES is currently primarily a NERC activity, we need to be doing this in the context of the implementation of the NERC science and information strategy.

Some Assumptions & Questions to underly the afternoon:

  • XML instances should be handed around between entities.
  • How should these be created? Persisted?
  • What interfaces should exist? (Creation, movement, interrogation)?

Session Agenda:

  • 14.00 - 14.30 : Possibilities within the NERC SIS (Nathan)
  • 14.30 - 14.45 : Using the CSIRO tools to export XML schema (?Simon?)
  • 14.45 - 15.00 : The Metafor methodologies (Bryan)
  • 15.00 - 15.10 : BGS plans for MOLES (Tim?)
  • 15.10 - 15.20 : CEDA (BADC+NEODC) plans for MOLES (Bryan)
  • 15.20 - 15.40 : CEH plans for MOLES (Mike?)
  • 15.40 - 15.50 : BAS plans for MOLES (Nathan?)
  • 15.50 - 16.00 : BODC plans for MOLES (Roy?)

Session Three: Wrap up

  • 16.00 - 16.30 : Wrap and identify timing, milestones, and aims for next meeting (Jonathan)
